Fishery Officers are the uniformed presence of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and patrol the inland and coastal areas of BC to check for compliance with the Fisheries Act and Regulations as well as certain aspects of the Small Vessel Regulations relating to boating safety. Patrol activities may be conducted by sea in a state of the art patrol vessel, by air or by vehicle and come into contact with members of the boating and fishing communities in the commercial, recreational and aboriginal sectors. In addition to these patrols, Fishery Officer patrol activity may focus on protection of fish habitat. Fishery Officers also participate in public awareness/educational events in schools and at public events in ensure the boating and fishing communities are informed of conservation concerns and the need for regulatory compliance. Fishery Officers are highly trained law enforcement officials who in addition to educational requirements must pass rigorous training sessions including courses at the RCMP academy before being posted to a field office.
