Treaty and Aboriginal Policy Directorate

Since fish are an important resource for Aboriginal people many of the things we do in the Fisheries and Oceans Canada are of interest to First Nations. In the Treaty and Aboriginal Policy Directorate we develop and respond to policies that guide our department with respect to Aboriginal fisheries and First Nation involvement in management of the resource. Our policy analysts collect and analyze data, develop and evaluate options and recommend approaches to senior officials who make the decisions. Our negotiators, work with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to represent federal fisheries interests in Treaty negotiations with First Nations and the Province. This involves presenting information, discussing issues, developing options and strategies, negotiating and consulting with other interested parties. These are challenging jobs involving knowledge of fisheries and government processes, understanding of First Nation and other stakeholder interests, strategic thinking and development of creative approaches to solutions.
