"My buddy Hugh and I were based in Winter Harbour
(Northwest tip of Vancouver Island) for a few days of fishing. Strong winds limited us to fishing in sheltered waters but finally on the fourth day the winds abated and we eagerly headed out to open water. While there were still 30 foot swells we could actually make 10-15 mph as motored up and down the swells.
We wanted to get out to 300 feet of water and as the bottom drops gradually that meant having to go several miles from shore... and it seemed to take forever. Finally the depth finder's readout showed 300 and stopped.
We were trying for Halibut and other ground fish and I rigged up my new jigging rod, 5'8", "Extra Heavy" rating, on which I had a big Penn levelwind reel I'd spooled with 100 lb test low-stretch Tuff Line. When fishing with heavy jigs monofilament line which stretches considerably, would be unsuitable.
I snapped on a Gibbs 16 oz. "Mudraker" lure, the Black & Red with glow model. I dropped the Mudraker down and with the slack tide and light winds it quickly hit the the bottom and my line was nearly vertical... a good thing. I started jigging and it didn't take long before I had a good strike.
Wow, what a fight I had on my hands. I hadn't used this low-stretch line before and I could feel every twitch and shake that fish made. I had no idea what it might be but knew it was a good fish.
After some wild fighting which included unexpected runs I finally got the fish up to the boat. To our great surprise I'd caught a big salmon, a 27 pound Chinook, on a Mudraker jig of all things!"
