The 2023 fishing season was a memorable journey for Gibbs Pro Team member Tim Thomas, filled with exciting highlights, new territories explored, and significant accomplishments. From mastering finesse techniques for yellow perch in the Finger Lakes to battling giant bluefin tuna off the coast of Maine, Tim's fishing adventures spanned diverse waters and targeted a wide range of species. Let's delve into the season overview, Tim's areas of focus, the primary species he targeted, and the top-performing Gibbs products that contributed to his success.

Fishing Season Overview: Mastering Finesse and Chasing Records in the Finger Lakes
-
Tim began the season by honing his finesse techniques for targeting jumbo yellow perch in Seneca and Keuka Lakes. The crystal-clear waters and stealth tactics required made this a challenging endeavor, but the efforts paid off with Tim's daughter Natalie landing her personal best perch. The pursuit of the NYS record yellow perch became a new goal. A summer stint on a commercial bluefin tuna boat off the coast of Maine brought its own set of challenges, with a highlight being the successful landing of a 365 lb bluefin tuna after a 3.5-hour battle. Salmon fishing on Lake Ontario and walleye fishing on Oneida Lake also yielded excellent results, contributing to Tim's strong performance in the Mammoth Innovations Battle of the Biggins tournament series.

Areas of Focus: Navigating New Waters and Championing Youth Anglers
-
Tim's focus in the spring was on mastering Seneca Lake and exploring new parts of the lake for perch. The Erie Canal became a vital waterway for Tim, offering a diverse fishery with a variety of species. The summer was dedicated to learning the intricacies of working on a commercial bluefin tuna boat, while also contributing to the development of the high school fishing league in central and western NY. Tim's commitment to introducing youth to diverse fishing experiences and establishing fishing as an official high school sport showcased his passion for the sport beyond personal pursuits.

Species of Focus: From Perch to Tuna - A Diverse Spectrum of Catches

Throughout the season, Tim targeted pike and yellow perch in winter, followed by yellow perch in spring, bluefin tuna in summer (alongside king salmon during charters), and walleye and yellow perch in the fall. Unique catches included sturgeon from the canal system, with the largest topping 52 inches, and thrilling encounters with thresher sharks while tuna fishing.

These products showcased versatility and effectiveness, contributing to successful outings in various fishing scenarios.
